New Trailer

Well, I believe my old trailer has about had it. What do you think? Besides the fact it is too small & too light duty, I've overloaded it more times than I care to admit by far more than I care to admit to the point the frame is breaking where the tongue attaches to the trailer.

I went shopping yesterday. Found me a new Gator. It is an 16 + 2 w/ brakes on both axles. It has removable fenders. It has has slide out ramps from the rear. Saves a whole of carrying them around. Most that I've seen require you to load from the side. Didn't think it was too bad for $2750.

This is the only thing that is kind of weird. It is a 14,000 lb rated frame w/ 235/85D16 wheels. I'm assuming this would be a 6 or 8 lug wheel. This only came with 205/75D15 on 5 lug wheels. The dealer thought said it was only a 7,000 lb trailer. But because of the sticker and the certificate of origin says 14,000, I paid a pretty penny for registration. I think I'm going to caller Gator tomorrow and see what they have to say.

I didn't really want the 14k, I really wanted a 10k, but he didn't have any 10k. He had several 7k, but didn't like their layout. They didn't have the dovetail and most were gates. Some had the ramps stored on the side.

Ya know I thought we did a good job of scouring the yard for the rocks. I still have more

I'd be talking to someone about that. In the 205/75/D15 size tire, even at load range E, is still too light. That doesn't reach 12K#. I'll bet those are load range C as that's the most common. That would be dangerous.

I talked to Gator. They say this is definitely a 7,000 trailer. I was wanting a 10k, but this will do everything I really needed it to do. Though a 10k would have allowed me to carry more gravel, but I can still take 3 ton a be just a little over weight. Gator said I need to get with the dealer and let him work with them to get a correct COO. I want to get it corrected because A.) it costs me more to register it and B.) Just because it ain't right.

Hmmmm. 3 ton of stone on a 7K trailer. That's awfully risky. Once you take the weight of the trailer itself out of the equation, you really only have about 5K available. You're asking those tires to hold up to 11,000#.

My neighbor needed some sand moved. His wife is the track & field coach and they ordered too much sand for the track and they need the excess removed. We loaded my tractor on his 16K trailer and took off to the school. We loaded the sand on the trailer to where it wouldn't take any more. There were no sides on the trailer. He took off and I had to drive the tractor home. Well, we unloaded and he went to drive off. All 4 tires were shot. They didn't blow but the belts in all 4 tires broke. That was a $500 mistake...

I went to the dealer on Friday. He faxed the old COO to Gator and Monday I got a new sticker for the front of the trailer and a new COO all specifing the 7,000.

I figure if I put 6,000 on the trailer, that is still 1,000 + whatever is on the tongue. Given that it should be 10% or so that is about 700 lbs. I don't believe this trailer weighs much over 1,700 lbs. I think I'm good. I'll keep the tires aired up to make sure they don't get hot or anything when I'm pulling. Still need to get a spare tire carrier and another wheel/tire combo though. I might get 2, I know chances are, if I blow one, I'll blow both on that one side.

For my little trailer (2000 GVW) I used to pay $12 per year. When I bought tags for this one (with the 14k GVW) for 6 months was $25. I'm hoping to get it for a year for $25 or so.

Jim, it's not easy to read their fee chart. It's based on actual trailer weight. But the 6 month fee on a 2200 lb trailer is $26 which is close to what you paid. If the real weight is 1700-1800 lbs then you should pay $27 for one year. What is the actual weight on the trailer?

Dang, those are high fees. In PA, and if I recall correctly, it's $12/year for the bigger trailers and $6/year for under 3000#. You can also get a registration that's good for 5 years by just paying 5x the annual fee.

Don't know, even on the new COO it is listed as 2200. I guess even if I had it weighed, that is the weight the state is going to go by.
